چکیده

Binary events are involved in many economic decision problems. In recent years, considerable progress has been made in diverse disciplines in developing models for forecasting binary outcomes. We distinguish between two types of forecasts for binary events that are generally obtained as the output of regression models: probability forecasts and point forecasts. We summarize specification, estimation, and evaluation of binary response models for the purpose of forecasting in a unified framework which is characterized by the joint distribution of forecasts and actuals, and a general loss function. Analysis of both the skill and the value of probability and point forecasts can be carried out within this framework. Parametric, semiparametric, nonparametric, and Bayesian approaches are covered. The emphasis is on the basic intuitions underlying each methodology, abstracting away from the mathematical details. JEL Classifications: C40, C50, C53, C80

Defensive forecasting for optimal prediction with expert advice

The method of defensive forecasting is applied to the problem of prediction with expert advice for binary outcomes. It turns out that defensive forecasting is not only competitive with the Aggregating Algorithm but also handles the case of “second-guessing” experts, whose advice depends on the learner’s prediction; this paper assumes that the dependence on the learner’s prediction is continuous.

Seismic Data Forecasting: A Sequence Prediction or a Sequence Recognition Task

In this paper, we have tried to predict earthquake events in a cluster of seismic data on pacific ring of fire, using multivariate adaptive regression splines (MARS). The model is employed as either a predictor for a sequence prediction task, or a binary classifier for a sequence recognition problem, which could alternatively help to predict an event. Here, we explain that sequence prediction/r...

On impossibility of sequential algorithmic forecasting

The problem of prediction future event given an individual sequence of past events is considered. Predictions are given in form of real numbers pn which are computed by some algorithm φ using initial fragments ω1, . . . , ωn−1 of an individual binary sequence ω = ω1, ω2, . . . and can be interpreted as probabilities of the event ωn = 1 given this fragment. According to Dawid’s prequential frame...

Multiobjective Optimization for the Forecasting Models on the Base of the Strictly Binary Trees

The optimization problem dealing with the development of the forecasting models on the base of strictly binary trees has been considered. The aim of paper is the comparative analysis of two optimization variants which are applied for the development of the forecasting models. Herewith the first optimization variant assumes the application of one quality indicator of the forecasting model named ...

A Multi-classification Method of Improved Svm-based Information Fusion for Traffic Parameters Forecasting

With the enrichment of perception methods, modern transportation system has many physical objects whose states are influenced by many information factors so that it is a typical Cyber-Physical System (CPS). Thus, the traffic information is generally multi-sourced, heterogeneous and hierarchical. Existing research results show that the multisourced traffic information through accurate classifica...
